Backgrounds

I’ve decided to try these out. Mostly straight out of the books, with a little bit tweaked here and there.

You can choose any number of non-exclusive backgrounds (e.g. you can’t choose both Poor and Wealthy; you were only raised once :P), generally maximum one per category. But no matter how many you pick, you get ONE of these benefits:

  • Gain a +2 bonus to checks with a skill associated with your background.
  • Add a skill associated with your background to your class’s skill list before you choose your trained skills.
  • Choose one language connected to your background. You can speak, read, and write that language fluently.

Geography

This is the basic environment of the region where you were raised.

  • Desert. Associated skills: Endurance, Nature. Possible countries: Amith, Marakata, Rubeia, Zaranya.
  • Forest. Associated skills: Nature, Perception. Possible countries: Damanse, New Ambar, Sapiros, Simame.
  • Frostfell. Associated skills: Athletics, Endurance. Possible country: Sapiros.
  • Mountains. Associated skills: Athletics, Dungeoneering. Possible countries: Damanse, New Ambar, Rubeia, Sapiros, Simame, Zaranya.
  • Swamp. Associated skills: Endurance, Stealth. Possible country: New Ambar.
  • Urban. Associated skills: History, Streetwise. Possible countries: Any.
  • Wetlands. Associated Skills: Athletics, Nature. Possible countries: Amith, New Ambar, Rubeia.

Society

Your social or economic standing while growing up.

  • Beggar. Associated skills: Bluff, Insight.
  • Poor. Associated skills: Streetwise.
  • Wealthy. Associated skills: History.
  • Disgraced. Associated skills: Arcana, Diplomacy.
  • Isolated. Associated skills: Endurance, Nature.
  • Street Rat. Associated skills: Acrobatics, Athletics.
  • Noble. Associated skills: Diplomacy, Insight. Possible countries: Asteria, Zaranya.

Birth

Some special circumstance of your birth.

  • Among Another Race. Associated skills: skill in which the other race gains a bonus. Common among non-humans, nigh-unheard of for humans.
  • Blessed. Associated skills: Insight, Religion.
  • Cursed. Associated skills: Bluff, Religion.
  • Foundling. Associated skills: Heal, Streetwise.
  • Omen. Associated skills: Arcana, History.
  • Primal Omen. Associated skills: Arcana, Nature.
  • Prophecy. Associated skills: History, Religion.
  • Refugee. Associated skills: Intimidate, Thievery.

Occupation

Before becoming an adventurer, this was how you earned your keep.

  • Artisan. Associated skills: Athletics, Diplomacy.
